Review
The online backup service Mozy has found a lot of new fans lately. Maybe because of the PC Magazine Editors Choice Award or the 2009 CNET Webware 100 Award, that honors the people's choice* in the best services available today.
But most likely because it's simply an excellent "product". Unlike Carbonite, Mozy offers an unlimited free trial with 2GB of storage space completely for free. And for only $4.95 a month (you don't have to subscribe for a year plan) you get unlimited backup space compared with what other personal online backup services charge these days, this price is simply ridiculous. There is no setup fee, no expiration and no credit card request.
Mozy attaches great importance to security: a 128-bit encryption during data transfers, a 448-bit Blowfish encryption on the servers and your own private symmetric encryption key secure your private files.
The setup is surprisingly easy: you download the software client and the setup wizard takes you through the installation. After the configuration, you decide between automatic or scheduled backups. From there Mozy runs in the background and backups the smallest changes - with no noticeable performance loss.
You can access your backup files from any computer, but unfortunately there is a limited number of restores per month (~ 5). Unlike Carbonite, Mozy doesn't offer the right-click menu option to choose a specific file for immediate backup.
Bottom line: Mozy is spoiled by success and deservedly so. You won't find another backup service that will give you 2 GB long term storage for free. The software worked in our test without any problem, the features are great and the price is outstanding. So if you're looking for an easy to use and affordable online backup tool and don't plan to restore you files more than 5 times a month, you simply can't go wrong with Mozy.
P.S. Mozy also offers Mac Support
P.P.S. In contrast to Carbonite Mozy offers a Pro-Version (MozyPro) for Business Users (you need one desktop license for each computer = $3.95 + $0.50/GB per month and one server license for each server you are backing up = $6.95 + $0.50/GB per month).

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!!! Staples charged me $80 to backup my files when they replaced my hard drive. They backed nothing up! I found it all and was able to replace it from my FREE Mozy backups. Income tax return, financial records, resumes. Thank you SOOO much Mozy!
